I’ve found another weekly writing challenge (yay). Rochelle invites us to write a flash fiction piece of 100 words or less based on the photo prompt:
Here is my attempt to this weeks challenge:
Breaking Records
“What you fooling around at?”
“Practicing for a new world record.”
“Not another one.”
“Ever heard of the gyroscopic effect?”
“Urrmm, No.”
“Well, I have. We learnt about it in school. It’s pretty cool, dad. I want to beat that guy, you know, David Spathaky?”
“Never heard of him.”
“He’s the one I gotta beat. He managed like a 108. He had an assistant too. Hey, maybe you could be mine?”
Chuckling he snorted, “you don’t stand a hope in hell. You ain’t no circus act. Get back to washing them dishes son. Plate spinning is for fools.”
This could end up being expensive if they have to keep buying replacement dinner plates! Good fun 🙂

Welcome to Friday Fictioneers, Swerve.
Fun take on the prompt. Dad is not so encouraging…

Thank you. No I think his son has tried his hand at a few too many record attempts previously 🙂

Hi Swerve welcome to The FF Crew. Unique take on the prompt. Fun dynamic between father and son despite his reticent encouragement. Guess he’s not seen too many records broken – there’s always hope though, flowing from that E word.
Hope this comment reads as encouraging- which is what I am trying to do…

He’s supposed to be washing them? I suspect that job won’t last long.

Never use the word ‘attempt’, you are a writer, tintins. I liked your story, and the way you finished. I imagine if I google David Spathaky I will find a famous plate spinner.

If this is your first time writing at FriFic… Welcome. I don’t write as often as I should.

Welcome tintins-I am pretty new to FF myself. And I love it! I enjoyed your story very much and got both the dad’s and the son’s angles. I was also delightfully reminded of “turns” who used to come on stage for a very few minutes with plates and poles back in the days when television variety was top of the bill.

Thanks for the comment Jilly. I do love these weekly challenges that I am coming across and enjoy taking part. I’m looking forward to reading all the flash fictions and getting to know you all.

On the other hand if he tries spinning enough plates there won’t be any washing up to do at all 🙂

Maybe it’s all a ploy 😉

Dear tintins,
Welcome to Friday Fictioneers. I hope you enjoy the exchange with our friendly global community. I think Junior needs to find another avenue to pursue. Not much of a future in spinning plates. 😉
Shalom,
Rochelle

Thanks, Rochelle. I feel part of the group already. I agree plate spinning isn’t the way forwards for the young man! 🙂

Hi, Tintins,
Welcome to Friday Fictioneers!
I like the way you’ve drawn the relationship between father and son. Dad is trying to keep the youngster grounded, but he’s very good-natured in how he does it. You can tell he understands that a boy has to dream if he’s ever to succeed.

Thanks for teaching me a new word. I remember seeing plate-spinners on some of the variety TV shows when I was a kid. It’s not a skill that many people try develop.
Great use of the prompt, and welcome to FFF.

That sure is a unique way to wiggle out of a chore… What a fun story, I’m sure Junior won’t be discouraged so easily. Next time he uses his dad’s valuable vinyl disk collection.
Welcome to the FF from me, too. 🙂
